After centuries of social mistreatment and cultural rejection towards those of a darker skin tone and non-Western background in Western society, it is no secret that the struggle for citizens of a migrant cultural heritage to pursue desired careers has always been great.
Noticeably, as it is a public vocation, the entertainment industry showcases the racial dynamics considering this factor, and although not so much as dramatic an issue as many years ago, while we are seeing more actors/singers/models of varying races achieve media success, in comparison to the number of white famous figures the scales are imbalanced.
So what is the reason for this if not due to racial prejudice? Singer Kalenna Harper from Dirty Money voices her experiences of her early failings in the music game relating to her skin colour:
'It was complexion...so the way they made it seem was, you black as night girl;
you crispy, burnt black, and that’s just not marketable right now.'
Do you sympathize with Kalenna's experience of rejection? Or do you think this is an excuse for her past failures in the industry?
Maybe its this mode of thinking that discourages darker-skinned people to chase their goals - if you have enough will you should find yourself moving forward in the right direction.
